Resonant Fatigue Tests on Drill Pipe Connections with Different Geometries and Sizes

In this study, a resonant bending fatigue test rig, designed and implemented by the University of Pisa, is presented, providing detailed description set-up machine, strain gauges calibrations, control system used with main electronic devices. Several geometries drill pipe connections samples made different materials were tested, all obtained experimental results are presented in paper compared to previous data. Fractographic images provided clearly show that, two kinds connections, crack initiation was found at connection zone, whereas for another geometry, it body. order interpret these latter results, discussion about section modulus various sections pipes provided, along an FE model specific zone one connections.
